The Hong Kong Emigration Project
A Study of the Ways Hong Kongers Who Emigrate Differ from Those Who Have Considered Emigrating from Hong Kong but Have Not Yet Done So
About the project
This project is a 2-year project that began at the Department of Sociology to evaluate to better understand what is driving emigration from Hong Kong and also what ties Hong Kong residents to Hong Kong society. We aim to generate policy-oriented analysis that can help to the management of emigration flows and the impact that they have had on different social and economic sectors of Hong Kong society.
The Principal Investigator of the Project, Jacob Thomas, is an American Assistant Professor at Corvinus University of Budapest in Europe and a Research Fellow at Princeton University’s Center for Migration and Development .
His invitation to the potential participants of the project is below:

Reasons Hong Kongers Give For Wanting to Emigrate
In 2019, CUHK HKIAPS estimated that 42.3% of people thought about emigrating from Hong Kong and 9.0% had prepared to emigrate from Hong Kong.
Other quantitative figures also corroborate census data that many people are leaving, but still far from the number who reported wanting or planning to do so...
Although these are the largest population drops in recent history, why have so many people who said they want to emigrate or who had prepared to move in previous years still have not emigrated?
How are those who emigrated out of Hong Kong different from the much larger numbers of people who have said they wanted to emigrate but have not yet done so?
The Hong Kong Emigration Project through a anonymous and confidential survey and oral history interviews will examine the specific events and general reasons that have motivated people to emigrate from Hong Kong and also why many who wanted to emigrate have not yet done so.
This study will also contribute knowledge about the differences between Hong Kongers who have migrated and those that have still not migrated.
Note: The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Survey and Behavioral Research Ethics Committee (SBRE) has already approved this research. (SBRE# -21-0262).
